This Sunday, 01/22/2017, a new Sunday school started at church for college and career Christians. The theme was Time with Psalm 90 as the verse. We have a time limit on earth and nobody knows when it's up. How are we going to use it? Lord willing, for the cause of Jesus Christ and His coming kingdom. It's more difficult than self-evident that Jesus should be our life and not our hobby. Our time spent serving God should outway the time spent in our hobbies: cars, movies, games, sports, politics, etc.
Being a Christian, should our hobbies (escape of reality) be Christ free? Your hobby may not be evil in itself; but if it's Christ-free, does it make it evil?
Could we view it as dessert? Many people stuff themselves with unhealthy food all day every day and the result is repulsive, sluggish, and useless. (Guilty and working on it) Even if you eat a couple vegetables once a week. But if you apply the principles, "save the best for last" and "you are what you eat" you will begin to eat right and look forward to the fun food later. Cake will be the last taste and not green beans. Obviously there are some differences between food and hobbies on how these principles are applied.
Save the best for last: no doubt, Jesus Christ is the best. He is the vegtiables, meat, fruit, water etc. A taste that must be acquired over time and repition and soon, the fun at the end of the day maybe too much. Too much sugar.
You are what you eat: You may not even enjoy it as much as you did when you were sluggish, repulsive, and useless. Now that you're pleasant, quick, and useful, your view toward your old hobbies start to diminish or at least go down a few levels.
My first impression, Christ-free hobbies are not wrong as long as they're not consuming nor interruptive of our service nor bad for our testimony. And if we are living healthy, our hobbies may not be there for long or at least have such a strong influence.
